Community School

What is a Community School?

A community school is both a place and a set of partnerships between the school and other community resources. Its integrated focus on academics, health and social services, youth and community development and community engagement leads to improved student learning, stronger families and healthier communities.

What makes community schools unique is the combination of four key pillars that together create the conditions necessary for students to thrive.

Pillars of Community Schools:

  • Integrated student supports (Include student academic, physical, social-emotional, and mental health support resources)
  • Enrich and expand learning opportunities (New and improved programming and services)
  • Family and community engagement (Provide safe and inviting environment for students, families, and the community as partners)
  • Collaborative leadership and practices (Share decisions and duties)

Meet the Community School Coordinator

Ms. Chantel Rothenburger

After earning my Bachelor’s Degree in Human Development from California State University, Long Beach, I geared my professional experience to explore every avenue within the human service field. Early in my career, I worked at Long Beach Unified School District, where I provided recreational services. Additionally, I explored opportunities through the nonprofit sector-notably establishing a youth development program at a temporary crisis shelter for teens. For professional growth, I pursued my license towards becoming a Certified Child Life Specialist where I worked with hospitalized and hospice families providing assessments, interventions, and facilitating groups all aimed at socio-emotional support and education. I have a passion for supporting families and utilizing strength-based approaches whenever possible.

I love spending time with my family and friends whenever I can. I focus on establishing memories that I can treasure for a lifetime. Fun Fact: I am a Southern California native and have gone to the same elementary, middle and high schools as my grandmother and mother. My hope is to continue to build family engagement, and find areas to expand enriched learning opportunities for the students at Mission Elementary. Please feel free to contact me for any needs, I am happy to always be available.
